Chris O'Dowd leads the Irish in Tony nominations

Chris O’Dowd has been nominated for a Tony award – just weeks after the opening night of broadway show Of Mice and Men.

The Boyle man has has been nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play category for his role in the critically acclaimed theatre show.

The Moone Boy creator stars in the Broadway show with well known actors James Franco, from Planet of The Apes and Leighton Meester from Gossip Girl.

The Bridesmaids star shared his joy on Twitter today, writing: “Beyond thrilled to accept a Tony nomination on behalf of my gorgeous #Mice&Men team. Go raibh maith agaibh Anna Shapiro @JamesFrancoTV et al.”

And he’s not the only Irish star hoping to win a Tony. Cork actress Sarah Greene has received a nomination in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play category for her role in The Cripple of Inishmaan.

The play has gained a lot of publicity due to Daniel Radcliffe’s role, but Gaiety graduate Sarah is now adding more hype to the show.

Meanwhile John Patrick Shanley’s Outside Mullingar is nominated for Best Play, The Cripple of Inishmaan, written by Martin McDonagh, was nominated for Best Revival of a Play.

The Tony Awards will take place on June 8 and will be hosted by Hugh Jackman.
