Angela Scanlon reveals she told a ‘total lie’ to BBC bosses to land presenting gig

Angela Scanlon has revealed that she told a “total lie” to BBC producers to land The One Show presenting gig.

The Irish presenter covered for regular host Alex Jones during her maternity leave in early 2017.

However, before landing the job, Angela told producers she had experience working on studio shows in Ireland.

Speaking on Spencer Matthews’ Big Fish podcast, Angela admitted: “He said, ‘Have you ever done studio?’ and I said, ‘Yeah I’ve done loads of it in Ireland.'”

“Then I went off to do Robot Wars and I got a call to say, ‘They want you to fill in on The One Show.’ I was on a train practising how to read autocue and I had no idea what I was doing.”

Although the 50-year-old revealed that she did enjoy her time on the show, she also added that she felt “quite lonely” as a result of her “white lie.”

The presenter confessed that acting like she knew more than she did was isolating.

Angela said: “I was too afraid to say guys, ‘I don’t know what open and switch means you’re going to have to literally break this down for me.'”

“I should have openly said, ‘These are my limitations, I’m going to need help: I think I can do it, I’m pretty sure I can, but I might need you to give me a hand.'”

“Whereas I just shut up shop and had to pretend that I knew exactly what I was doing which was quite lonely.”

“I had fooled myself into believing that if I reached these things that I’d be great, everything would be fantastic.”

In April, it was revealed that Angela was the replacement for Graham Norton’s weekend slot on Virgin Radio UK.

The popular presenter announced his shock exit back in February, and said he wanted to have his “weekends back” after 13 years of presenting.

Angela said about the news: “I know how many of you have dreamt about waking up to my husky dulcet tones, well dreams come true gang!”

“I’ll be getting up with you every weekend on Virgin Radio & I am inappropriately excited. Stick the kettle on!”

The Irish presenter hots a brand new breakfast show on Saturday and Sunday from 7am until 10am.
