Watch: Sinead O'Connor releases her new version of the Irish national anthem

Sinead O’Connor has written her own version of the Irish national anthem – but has been told the Government doesn’t want it.

The Nothing Compares 2 U star showed off her new version which features the original melody – but with lyrics taken straight from the 1916 Proclamation.

But she has since been told by the Government that “there are no plans to change the anthem” – but says the current version is “awful” and “very war like”.

The Bray singer has always been passionate about politics and recently joined Sinn Fein.

Sinead’s main goal in joining the political party is to establish a new republic in Ireland and seems to already be on her way with her new national anthem.

She previously said: “I have been blasting my mouth off in the hope that doing so might help me to more quickly meet privately with Gerry Adams to discuss two matters.

“One of which is the specific reason I’ve publicly given for wanting to join Sinn Fein, which is the creation of a new country. I would love a meeting as soon as possible.”
