It has been revealed Charlie Webster is in a coma after contracting malaria whilst in Rio.
The Sky Sports broadcaster, who previously dated Downton Abbey star Allen Leech from 2012 to 2015, was in the Brazilian city covering the 2016 Olympics games.
“On Saturday 6th August, Charlie became unwell and was admitted to hospital in Rio de Janeiro,” a spokesperson for the Sheffield native wrote.
In a message posted on her Twitter account, the spokesperson told the 33-year-old’s followers that what they thought was dehydration – turned out to be a bacterial infection, but she was receiving great care in hospital.
“What was initially thought as dehydration, caused by her riding to Rio, has since been diagnosed as a severe complication caused by a bacterial infection,” they wrote.
“Charlie is receiving great care and we will updated when we can.”
On Charlie’s Twitter, they posted again thanking people for the support they’ve been sending her.
“Thank you very much for your messages of support, it means a lot,” they said in the post.
Since the original Twitter message was posted, Charlie has slipped into a coma – and according to The Sun, her family have flown out to Rio to be by her side.
