Interview: Brendan O'Carroll goes cold on new Mrs Brown's Boys series – as it's too much work

Brendan O’Carroll has revealed he’s unlikely to write a fourth season of Mrs Brown’s Boys – as it’s too much work.

The Dublin comedian told Goss.ie that while he’d never “write off” another full series, it would mean he wouldn’t see his family enough.

And the 59-year-old said “the reason I worked as hard as I did to get here was to work less – not to work more.”

He added: “I’d never write off a fourth series. The nice thing about having the Christmas specials is that it keeps Mrs Brown warm, it keeps her alive.

“So at any point we’re able to pop in and do a series of six programmes. The BBC, not unlike myself, would love another series. And Universal would love another movie.

“But the reason I worked as hard as I did to get here was to work less – not to work more. And I’ve got five fabulous grandchildren, and me and Jenny want to spend time with them.

“So the only thing the success can buy me is more time. So I want to be as economic as possible.”

But Brendan said he is going quite cool on following up the Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie with D’sequel.

He added: “It’s a year out of your life. It’s not like making a TV series, which you can make in eight weeks.

“It’s a solid year between meetings and finance and trying to get the money together. It takes an awful lot.

“But I’d prefer to do a series, because we work together better as a family. And when you’re doing a series for eight weeks, we’re all together, we’re in every day.

“Where when you’re doing a movie you can do it over 10 weeks and there’s some times where I was two or three days without seeing any of the family because you’re only working on your scenes.”

Meanwhile, speaking at the Philanthropist of the Year Awards, Brendan admitted he didn’t expect Mrs Brown’s Boys to win at the National Television Awards.

Shocked: Brendan never expected to win at NTAs

He told Goss.ie: “Because I was doing the Mrs Brown thing, I was there for the rehearsal. And during the dress rehearsal, they have all the chairs laid out and they have photographs of all the celebrities on the chairs.

“Then they go, ‘The winner is…’ and they give a Disney name. Like Pinocchio. Or Cinderella. Or Mickey Mouse. So I’m in the dressing room and I’m watching this.

“And I realised, say it was Best Actor in a Soap, and they say, ‘The winner is… Mickey Mouse’ so not to reveal it. So when whoever was playing Mickey Mouse came up to collect the award, they were playing the music for the programme.

“I was listening, and it was Eastenders, so I knew who was going to get that. I was waiting for the comedy one to come up.

“I’m changing, getting my bra on, and they announce the winner – and they play the music for Benidorm. So I went, ‘Oh God, we’re not getting the award’. So it was a big surprise when we did get it.”
