Denise Welch has confirmed her son Matty Healy’s engagement to his girlfriend Gabbriette Bechtel.
Earlier this week, The 1975 singer sparked rumours he had popped the question to the model after she shared a pic of a black diamond ring on her wedding finger.
Speaking on Loose Women on Wednesday, the 66-year-old confessed the couple had shared the news to their loved ones “a few weeks” ago.
She told her co-stars on the panel: “We couldn’t be happier. She is everything I would want in a daughter-in-law.”
“I have known for a few weeks that Matty got engaged.”
“They went over to see their friends Charli and George in New York,” she continued.
“I woke up this morning to the fact they’ve put it on Instagram. Instagram official, he has got engaged to Gabbriette.”
“She is from Los Angeles, she is absolutely gorgeous. She does have a rat,” she added sharing about her future daughter-in-law.”
Denise also shared about the special engagement ring Matty gave to Gabbriette, saying: “Black diamond, he had it made for her and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”
The 1975 singer was first linked to the model in September 2023 following his whirlwind romance with Taylor Swift
Sharing the news earlier this week, the 26-year-old flashed the ring as she wrote: “MARRYING THE 1975 IS VERY BRAT @trumanblack.”
Matty reshared the post onto his own social media account as further confirmation the pair are set to tie the knot.
Earlier this year, the musician came under fire after his ex-Taylor released her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department – with a number of songs alluding to their relationship.
Since its release, fans have been carefully dissecting the lyrics of each song, as the album is said to be inspired by her split from Joe Alwyn, and her whirlwind romance with The 1975 frontman.
Taylor’s shock split from Joe was confirmed in early 2023 after six years together, and she subsequently had a brief romance with Matty.
Taylor dated the British singer early last year, before she struck up a romance with her now-boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce.
While fans expected the album to be inspired entirely by her split from Joe, a number of songs appear to reference her relationship with Matty – including The Black Dog and Guilty As Sin.
Fortnight (feat. Post Malone) and The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived also seem to reference her brief tryst with the singer.
While Matty had remained silent when the album was released, he has since commented on her new record.
When asked by a reporter from Entertainment Tonight what he thought of the “diss”, Matty replied: “I haven’t really listened to that much of it but I’m sure it’s good.”
