Captain Tom Moore hospitalised with Covid-19 at the age of 100

Captain Tom Moore has been hospitalised with the coronavirus.

The veteran became a hero of the pandemic in the UK, after he raised over €36 million for the NHS during the first lockdown by walking 100 laps of his garden ahead of his 100th birthday in April last year.

The centenarian was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II last summer in acknowledgement for his efforts in a socially distanced ceremony.

Tom was taken to Bedford Hospital on Sunday, after being treated for pneumonia for some time and testing positive for Covid-19 last week.

Tom’s family released a statement on Twitter, reading: “He was at home with us until today when he needed additional help with his breathing. He is being treated in a ward although he is not in ICU.”

“The medical care he has received in the last few weeks has been remarkable and we know that the wonderful staff at Bedford Hospital will do all they can to make him comfortable and hopefully return home as soon as possible.”

“We understand that everyone will be wishing him well. We are of course focusing on my father and will update you when we are able to.”

Following the news of his hospitalisation, a host of famous faces sent messages of support to the 100-year-old.

Dr. Alex George tweeted: “My thoughts and prayers go out to Captain Sir Tom Moore, a true hero of these times. Get well soon.”

Piers Morgan wrote: “Come on, Captain Sir Tom – we’re all rooting for you.”

Amanda Holden penned: “Goodness me. Wishing you a speedy recovery and look forward to a cup of tea with you when it’s safe.”
