RTE have lined up Joe Duffy to host the Saturday Night Show if Brendan O’Connor is too injured return this week.

Producers fear that Brendan will still be too ill after his surgery last Sunday on his broken arm, as he is kept in hospital by doctors.

Now bosses have put Liveline radio host Joe Duffy on call to step in for the 45-year-old if he has to pull out.

An RTE insider told the Sun: “There were all sorts of names mentioned but the team on the show feel they would be in safe hands with Joe.”

Doctors forced Brendan to undergo surgery after battling through his chat show for the past few weeks with his arm in a sling after a fall in the bath.

Similar to Bono, he had titanium screws and plates inserted in his forearm.

An RTE spokeswoman said Brendan was being discharged from St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin today and it was “too early to say whether he would be recovered in time for Saturday’s show”.

Earlier in the week, Brendan said: “It was a bigger operation than I thought. I’m hopeful about making this Saturday’s show.”

Model Roz Purcell and journalist Paul Kimmage are two of the guests lined up to appear on the weekend chat show.
