Susan Loughnane says Debbie's death in Love/Hate was true to life: 'Addicts rot in a room and no one gives a s**t'

Love/Hate star Susan Loughnane has admitted the death of her character Debbie was realistic.

The actress, who played the drug addict in the RTE drama, said she’s glad she didn’t die in an action scene.

“People were like ‘oh I was so annoyed when she died. It was such a let down, why did she have to die like that?’

“Cause that’s reality I’m sorry but that’s what happens. People rot in a room in no one gives a s**t about them,” she explained.

Realistic: Susan said she wanted her death to be true to life | RTE

“I don’t want a glamorous death. I didn’t want it to be a big shoot out. While that would be great I love the whole drama, it wouldn’t be fair. It wouldn’t be the truth.

“When I read the script yes of course I was disappointed to die.

“I died a really sad, tragic death but it wasn’t a glamorous one. For me that was a really important thing,” she said.

Speaking on An Irishman Abroad, Susan said she felt it was her duty as a good person to portray a drug addict in the right way.

“I don’t like the word junkie, I don’t like when people are nasty to addicts,” she said.

“It’s like not taking the holocaust seriously, any illness, depression, it’s really horrible to not take it seriously.”
