Netflix acquires the rights to the works of one of the UK’s best-loved writers

Netflix has acquired the rights to all of Roald Dahl’s works.

The streaming giant have purchased The Roald Dahl Story Company, the firm which owns the author’s copyright.

Announcing the news on Twitter, Netflix said: “Excited to announce that the Roald Dahl Story Company (RDSC) and Netflix are joining forces to bring some of the world’s most loved stories to current and future fans in creative new ways.”

“In addition to projects coming under this new partnership, Netflix and the RDSC have already begun to work on Roald Dahl’s timeless stories told through a new lens,” they added.

“Projects in the works include an event series from the awe-inspiring vision of Taika Waititi based on the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and another wholly original take on the Oompa-Loompas.”

“A live action feature film adaptation of the multi-award-winning stage show Matilda, directed by Matthew Warchus — and starring Emma Thompson, Lashana Lynch and introducing Alisha Weir as Matilda — will be released in 2022.”

Netflix co-chief executive Ted Sarandos and Luke Kelly, Roald Dahl’s grandson and managing director of the RDSC, released a statement on the move.

They said: “As we bring these timeless tales to more audiences in new formats, we’re committed to maintaining their unique spirit and their universal themes of surprise and kindness, while also sprinkling some fresh magic into the mix.”

“We want to say a huge thank you to all the people who have contributed to this great story so far. Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue the close working relationships established by RDSC with existing rights holders, publishing, theatre and entertainment partners, and many others to protect and grow the great legacy of these beloved stories.”
