Love/Hate's Aoibhinn McGinnity has never done drugs – over fear of being 'tarnished' by overdose death

Love/Hate star Aoibhinn McGinnity has insisted she has never done drugs – over fears she’d die from an overdose.

The TV actor – who plays Trish in the show – said she is too much of a “nerdy pants” to indulge in the cocaine lifestyle seen in the gangland series.

And the 29-year-old especially worries that she could end up dying like Amy Winehouse or Cory Monteith after an overdose.

She said: “I’ve never done drugs. I’m a bit of a nerdy pants. It’s really sad when you hear that an actor or performer died and everybody is speculating that it must have been drugs.

“I’m not putting myself on the same playing level as Hollywood actors, but I’m an actor too, and I’d hate to be tarnished with such a horrible brush.

“It’s not fair. Plus, one glass of wine gets me pretty much going. I’m a bit of a lightweight, so that’s enough for me.”

However Aoibhinn said she does slightly know what it feels like to be part of the gangland world on a gun-toting trip to Thailand.

She said: “I held a rifle in Thailand at a shooting range! It’s the heaviest thing I’ve ever, ever held. It actually scared me.”

Meanwhile, Aoibhinn admits that it can be extremely tough coming home after shooting the RTE series.

She told VIP Magazine: “I wouldn’t be coming home feeling very dark, but the more you do it, the better you get at switching off.

“You keep that energy for a scene – however many takes you need to do – because you just want to get it so right, so when you come home, your energy is so confused.

“You need to go, sit and chill. I remember doing a great show called Elevator two years, at the Fringe Festival. It was all a bit cocaine-y, a bit party-ish and a bit seedy.

“And because I was in a room all day in a dark theatre rehearsing and then performing – and you really have to go there – I remember feeling dark.”
