And Laurence Kinlan, who plays Elmo, revealed the cast are still in the dark about the future of the show.

He added: “We just did a chat in RTE there with all the staff. Jane [Gogan, the Commissioning Editor] just said it’s the same process every year.

“When the show is finished they’ll sit down and decide it, and that’s the same as it has been for the last five years.”

Already, Stuart Carolan has said he has started to pen new episodes, but isn’t sure RTE will buy them.

More than a million viewers are expected to watch the finale on RTE One tomorrow night, where a leading character is likely to be killed off.

And Tom says he knew immediately he was part of something special when he tried out for the first series.

He said: “Very quickly from reading the scripts and meeting director David Caffrey, I knew it was something that if RTE were going to go with, it would be something that would have a huge impact.

“But it didn’t really explode until season two — that’s when Love/Hate really took off.”
