Charles Haughey's son: Aidan Gillen did a 'brilliant' job playing my dad

Charles Haughey’s son Sean has revealed he thought Aidan Gillen did a “brilliant” job of portraying his father in Charlie.

The son of the ex-Taoiseach said it was a strange experience watching someone portray his father on screen but believed Aidan was very convincing in the RTE drama.

He said: “One of the good things I can say about the drama was I think Aidan Gillen as an actor, was brilliant.”

He added: “He got the voice, he got many of the mannerisms, it was weird looking at somebody playing your father. I thought his performance was excellent.”

Sean admitted he wasn’t sure who Aidan was before he was cast as his father but was relieved to see he was such a talented actor.

“I wasn’t a big fan of Love/Hate so it didn’t really mean much to me. Obviously since then I’ve learned a lot more about him. He does seem to be an excellent actor,” he said.

Sean also told of his annoyance that the RTE series took much “dramatic license” with the way certain figures were portrayed.

“A lot of dramatic license was taken, I think everybody accepts that,” he told RTE Radio 1.

Drama: Sean admitted Tom Vaughan-Lawlor’s character was enhanced for “dramatic effect”

“I think PJ Marra’s character was excellent, it didn’t necessarily look like him, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, but his character was witty and really enhanced the programme… He was given more importance than he had.

“The Ministers weren’t portrayed very well, they were portrayed as idiots. That was all for dramatic effect.”
