Russell Crowe addresses pal Ryan Tubridy’s RTÉ payments scandal

Russell Crowe has addressed his friend Ryan Tubridy’s RTÉ payments scandal.

The legendary actor and the former Late Late Show host have been friends for several years.

The presenter named the Hollywood star as one of his “best ever guests” to appear on The Late Late Show, with the latter referring to Ryan as “my man” and “the best broadcaster ever.”

Speaking to RTÉ Entertainment, Russell was reluctant to comment on Ryan’s dramatic departure from RTÉ.

However, the actor continued: “All I would say is that he is a fine man. He has a wonderful intellect and a wonderful heart.

“He’s so well-read, fascinating and interesting to talk to about particular subjects. When he’s interested in something, he has a way of finding something fresh to say about it. I enjoy his company.”

“It was a very heavy situation for him, but I have no comment. I don’t really know enough about the situation.”

The broadcaster previously hosted RTÉ Radio 1’s coveted 9-10am slot, but was pulled from the airwaves last June when the payments scandal erupted.

RTÉ was plunged into chaos last summer when it was revealed that Ryan’s salary had been understated by €345k over six years.

While the presenter was set to return to the station in September, contract negotiations broke down between him and RTÉ – and he lost his radio show for good.

Ryan has subsequently landed a new show with Virgin Radio UK, which he moved to London for in January.

The show airs Monday to Friday alongside Virgin Radio’s weekday on-air crew.

This includes The Chris Evans Breakfast Show, Jayne Middlemiss in the afternoon and Ricky Wilson at drivetime.
