Paul Mescal’s mum shares hopeful update on her cancer battle

Paul Mescal’s mum has shared a hopeful update on her cancer battle.

The actor’s mother Dearbhla was diagnosed with a form of bone marrow cancer called multiple myeloma in 2022.

Since then, the 55-year-old has been documenting her treatment on social media, and in her latest update she had some positive news to share.

Sharing photos taken over the past 12 months, Dearbhla wrote: “It’s been a moment. 365 days of moments to be exact.

“This day last year I came home from the most incredible Berkitt Ward at St James’ Hospital following my stemcell transplant. I continue on my journey with the amazing team in Unit 6 at The Beacon Hospital.

“I am blessed beyond words. I cannot believe where I am, where I’ve been & most excitingly where I am going. My immune system is on the up & my energy is climbing.

“I am so thankful to all those who mind, hold, love & care for me. You are my forever people.”

“Now with gratitude, hope, loads of joy & a sprinkling of courage let’s find out whats next?!” she added.

Dearbhla’s diagnosis became public knowledge in January 2023, after her eldest son Paul landed his first Oscar nomination.

The 28-year-old was nominated in the Best Actor category for his role in Aftersun, going up against the likes of Colin Farrell and Austin Butler.

Paul’s family were elated over the news, and his sister Nell Mescal shared a sweet photo of them reacting to his nomination over a group video call.

Hours after the Oscar nominations were announced, Paul’s sister Nell revealed on Twitter: “My mum got a haircut today in prep for her chemotherapy and then paul got nominated for an oscar life is so crazy.”

That April, Paul paid tribute to his mum as he accepted the Best Actor award at the Olivier Awards for his stage performance as Stanley in A Streetcar Named Desire.

In his acceptance speech, Paul thanked his parents and wished his mum well.

“I hope you get better,” he said.
