The end date for Game of Thrones has been announced

HBO have confirmed all Game of Thrones fans’ worst nightmare – the show is coming to an end.

While hardcore GOT fans hoped the series would last forever, officials from the broadacster have announced the show will end after series 8.

HBO programming chief Casey Bloys said the seventh season will air next year and will have 7 episodes instead of 10, and the series after that (season 8) will be the final season.

However there is some glimmer of hope, the programming head added that they are “open” to a possible spin-off seires.

“We’re open to it, (the producers) aren’t opposed to it, but there’s no concrete plans right now,” he said.

Last year alone, Game of Thrones won a record breaking 12 Emmy Awards for one series in a single year.

The show has also picked up 23 nominations ahead of this year’s annual ceremony being held in September.
