Des Bishop: 'I earned €180 a month from my job in China'

Comedian Des Bishop has opened up on his time in China – revealing he worked as a “welcomer” in a restaurant.

The Irish based funny man, who filmed a documentary for RTE in the Asian country, admitted he only earned €180 month from his job.

“I got a job in a restaurant like a Chinese restaurant but you don’t have to call it a Chinese restaurant over there, it’s just a restaurant,” she said.

“Some people know about it but it was a way to immerse myself into the language and I was a welcomer, it was great.

“It was favour but I literally just had to say only one phrase over and over so I worked on the wage of 1800 yuan a month which with the current translation is about €180 a month,” he told the Anton Savage Show on Today FM.

“Which sounds terrible but the weird thing was, I wanted to make something of it – I kind of got that idea from the work experience thing I did years ago working on minimum wage.”

“I thought I would do a mini work experience in China, I thought I would do a thing about the money but I joke in the show, I show the horrible dorm I lived in, which was true but I lived there for free,” he admitted.

“And they feed you and you don’t get any days off, which I didn’t realise was a punchline but then everybody laughs whenever I say that, which I never intended.

“Basically it was impossible to spend the money so at the end of the month, I didn’t end up talking about the money cause I hardly spent anything,” he added.

Opening about the dorm he lived in, the New Yorker admitted he had his own bed.

“I didn’t share a bed with the lads. There’s four Chinese guys there but I had my own little bed.”

“It was temporary dorm, it was a prefab – it was pretty horrible but in fairness to the restaurant we didn’t push it too much because it was just temporary. They were building a new dorm for staff.”
