Brian O’Driscoll on turning 40: ‘It doesn’t scare me. It’s a number’

Brian O’Driscoll has commented on the prospect of turning 40, and he said it doesn’t scare him.

When the rugby legend was asked what he thought about turning 40 he said, “It doesn’t scare me. I don’t feel like I am 38 and I don’t feel like I am married to a 38-year-old woman. It is a number. And it will be fun to celebrate.”

He also revealed that fatherhood has changed him, “You reprioritise what you think is truly important in life. And I think it mellows you – not that I wasn’t mellow.”

He continued, “I love spending time with my kids and I certainly don’t see them as a chore. I have an office at home and I like them having access to the office and running in. I’ll roll my eyes but secretly I love it.”

Speaking to The Irish Independent, he talked about how their family holidays have changed over time.

“You live your life vicariously through your kids, so it’s wherever they have a good time. We went away somewhere recently and they had a ball, and it was very different – hardly any booze, early enough nights, box sets.

“Seeing them laughing in the pool and the fun that they had, that’s what your life becomes. And there’s a massive contentment with that too.”
