Barbie becomes most successful film in Irish box office history

Barbie has become the most successful film in Irish box office history.

It made an eye-watering €8,854,036, just one month and a day after its release earlier this year.

Avatar, which was directed by James Cameron, previously held the title for 14 years.

The 2009 film raked in €8,702,770 after its release.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has also surpassed Titanic (1997), which made €8,253,258 after its release.

Margot Robbie stars as the iconic doll while Ryan Gosling plays her love interest Ken in the film – which hits cinemas on July 21.

Irish actress Nicola Coughlan will also star in the highly-anticipated flick, playing a diplomat Barbie.

The stellar cast also includes Dua Lipa, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Emerald Fennell, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Hari Nef, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Rhea Pearlman, and Will Ferrell.

The satirical film will follow the titular character as she is expelled from Barbie Land for not being perfect enough, and sets off on an adventure in the real world.
