After the sad news that Victoria Smurfit is divorcing from her husband of 15 years, Goss.ie have taken a look back through the most shocking Irish splits.
From heartbreaks to big mistakes, we feel like we’ve been there through them all with a tub of ice-cream in hand.
So grab the kleenex as we walk down memory lane and take a look at the couples that were never meant to be.
1. Ryan Tubridy and Aoibhinn Nà Shúilleabháin
The most recent split on the list – after four long years together Ryan and Aoibhinn called it quits just before Christmas.
Both intelligent, both RTE stars, we really thought these two would last forever.
The pair had just bought a new home together and things were looking positive for the intellectual duo but alas it wasn’t meant to be.
Since the love split both have invested lots of time in their work with Aoibhinn receiving her PhD and Ryan writing a children’s book.
Just this week Aoibhinn opened up to Goss.ie for the first time since the break up.
2. Holly Carpenter and Cian Healy
Another shock split in 2014 was Holly Carpenter and Cian Healy.
A rugby star and a model – it was the perfect showbiz relationship, but things came to an end last summer.
The young couple had been going strong for over two years with Holly being a firm fixture at Cian’s Leinster and Ireland rugby matches.
Ever since their shocking split, former head WAG Holly has been busy working with Assets while Cian has since ran off to London to get his fill of Victoria Secret Models.
Holly has said she is happy with single life, but watch this space…
3. Rob Kearney and Susie Amy
Sticking to rugby stars, friends and family of Rob Kearney were shocked when he split from British actress Susie Amy.
The Footballers wives actress started dating the hunky rugby star back in 2010 but after three years off and on, the relationship went sour.
Finally calling it quits, Ireland’s eligible bachelor Rob is now loved up with 22-year-old student Jess Redden – now that’s more like it.
4. Laura Whitmore and Danny O’Reilly
He was heartbroken, she was heartbroken – we were all in shock when Danny O’Reilly and Laura Whitmore broke up.
A heartbreaking tale of two music lovers that just weren’t meant to be, the MTV News host and The Coronas frontman were Ireland’s answer to John Lennon and Yoko Uno.
After sharing countless red carpet, gigs and a music video cameo for Mark My Words, the relationship lasted for two years, even moving in together in London.
The TV presenter allegedly broke up with Danny when he was touring Europe with his band.
Now the blonde bombshell has announced she’s quit MTV News and The Coronas are touring with their album The Long Way.
5. Yvonne and Ronan Keating
Ronan and Yvonne Keating were Ireland’s power couple – and they owned it.
But after 14 years of marriage, it all fell apart when Ronan was caught having a seven-month affair with Boyzone tour dancer Francine Cornell in 2009.
Ronan spoke of his regret at hurting his model wife and while the couple tried reconciling, it seemed all too much as they announced their separation in 2011.
The parents of three have both gone their separate ways and seem happy in with their new partners.
6. Glenda Gilson and BOD
Ok try and forget about the hair for a moment, let’s try and remember how much we loved Glenda Gilson and Brian O’Driscoll together.
Once upon a time The Posh and Becks of Ireland, these two were once the hottest couple on the scene.
Sharing many tabloid pages, the pair started going out in 2003 as Brian was coming into the height of his fame.
However it wasn’t all sunshine and roses for the the celebrity couple who dated for over three years, when Brian dumped her at the end of a night out after losing an important game against Munster.
Let’s put it this way…no one scored that night.
7. Nadia Forde and Luke Fitzgearld
When it comes to celeb splits, rugby stars seem to be everywhere.
Set to be the next Glenda and BOD, I’m A Celeb star Nadia Forde and Luke Fitzgerald pair were dating for over a year Luke pulled the plug on the relationship.
Nadia was a constant presence at many of Luke’s rugby matches but it wasn’t to last and became best pals with all the WAGs but her title was quickly lost when Luke walked away.
Recording an album, appearing on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! and an ambassador for Match.com –Â Nadia is certainly making the most of single life.
8. Georgia Salpa and Calum Best
Ah our favourite celebrity showmance – Georgia Salpa and Calum Best really were the best famous couple, even though no one really knew if they were actually together.
After meeting on Celebrity Salon, the good-looking pair hooked-up and dated for a whirlwind couple of months in 2011.
From publicising holidays, doing double-page spreads together in magazines and tell alls in newspapers – these two really loved talking about their relationship.
Since their split, lothario Calum admitted to cheating on the stunning half-Greek model and now Georgia is marrying millionaire Joe Penna in Italy this year.
