Katie McCabe scores historic goal for Republic of Ireland in Women’s World Cup

Katie McCabe has just made history.

On Wednesday, the 27-year-old scored the Republic of Ireland’s first ever goal in the Women’s World Cup.

The Tallaght native scored in the fourth minute of the Girls in Green’s match against Canada, which kicked off at 1pm GMT+1.

The Republic of Ireland played the inaugural 2023 Women’s World Cup match against host nation Australia on Thursday, July 20.

The team ultimately lost 1-0 against Australia; but, the Irish rallied around them nonetheless.

According to RTÉ, live coverage of the opening match saw 511,000 TV viewers watch it on RTÉ2 and 360,000 live streams on RTÉ Player.

The first of the teams three group games is the second highest streamed live sporting match on the RTÉ Player, with the FIFA Men’s World Cup final in November 2022 having generated 490,000 streams.

The Republic of Ireland will face Nigeria on Monday, July 31 at 11am GMT+1.
