Iconic Dublin department store reopens almost nine years after closure

This iconic Dublin department store has reopened almost nine years after closure.

The newly restored Clery’s quarter opened its doors for the first time since 2015 today.

Retail giant H&M was the first shop to welcome customers this morning.

The famous department store has been undergoing extensive renovations for a number of years.

Clyde Carroll from business group Dublin Town says it’s a huge moment for the new Clerys Quarter.

Clyde told FM104: “It’s gonna make a real difference to the shopping, particularly on the north side of the city.”

“It’s also a vote of confidence in the city center to have iconic international brands like H&M and Decathlon show faith in Dublin and believe in Dublin, and st up here.”

The restoration work also saw many of the building’s historic features kept.

The iconic Clery’s clock was refurbished and the grand staircase was restored.

There is also a host of new tearooms which have been added and will be open to the public.

Klas Degeryd, Head of Expansion at H&M UK & Ireland told the Irish Independent: “We are delighted to be opening our doors in the newly restored iconic Clerys Quarter, helping to bring a new lease of life to a much-loved building,”

“This will be the largest H&M store in Dublin, where customers can enjoy the latest fashion styles through our curated seasonal collections, in a newly designed store which celebrates our fashion heritage, style and creativity.”

Clery’s was built in 1853 and is arguably one of the most famous landmarks in Ireland.

The building was destroyed by a fire during the 1916 Easter Rising and rebuilt again in 1922.

The beloved clock which hangs at the side of the building has been a commonly used meeting point for couples going on dates throughout history.

The 162-year building has experienced three changes of name, several owners and three bankruptcies.
