Ruth Negga’s new film rakes in SERIOUS cash on opening weekend

The film is about an interracial couple's arrest in 1950s Virginia

Ruth Negga’s new film Loving opened strongly in the U.S. on a limited release.

The film follows an couple in 1950s Virginia who are arrested and sentenced to prison for violating interracial marriage laws.

On it’s opening weekend, the film was shown in just four theatres, but still managed to gross $169,000.

According to The Warp, the film took in $42,350 per screen – double what Marvels Doctor Strange took in at $21,893 per screen despite being shown in 3,822 screens across North America.

Loving’s opening compares well with Eddie Redmayne’s The Theory Of Everything which launched on the same weekend two years ago, and took in an average of $41,753 per screen and won multiple awards.

The news comes after Ruth has already been tipped for Oscar glory, thanks to her incredible performance in Loving.
