It's not just Star Wars – see the Top 5 famous movies filmed in Kerry

This week everyone was talking about the Star Wars crew jetting into Kerry to film scenes for the new movie.

But the sci-flick, shot on Skellig Michael, isn’t the only famous film to be shot in the county.

Take a look at the Top 5 films made in Kerry.

1. The Field (1990)

Directed by Jim Sheridan, John B Keane’s play The Field was adapted to the big screen.

Starring Richard Harris as Bull McCabe, the movie was shot in parts of Kerry as well as Galway and Wicklow.

The Field showed off Kerry’s stunning landscape and large farm land in the county.

 

2. Far and Away (1992)

Directed by Ron Howard, Far and Away wasn’t well received by critics, but the location was stunning.

Filmed partially in Dingle, the movie started Tom Curise and Nicole Kidman. The opening act of the film is set around Clogher Strand, Slea Head, on the Dingle Peninsula

The Hollywood stars played two Irish immigrants who flee to America.

 

3. Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince (2009)

While the famous Irish scene in Harry Potter remains at the Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare, the crew also shot scenes in Kerry.

After their scene at the famous cliffs Harry and Professor Dumbledore then appear on the famous Lemon Rock in Kerry.

 

4. Excalibur (1981)

1883

Directed by John Boorman the fantasy movie starred Gabriel Byrne and Patrick Stewart.

Filmed entirely in Kerry, Excalibur retells the legend of King Aurthur and the  knights of the round table. 

The cinematography was so great, director of photography Alex Thomson even got an Oscar nomination.

 

5. Ryan’s Daughter (1970)

This film actually was an oscar winner.

The film, set in 1916, tells the story of a married Irish woman who has an affair with a British officer during World War I, despite opposition from her nationalist neighbours. 

Cinematographer Freddie Young won an Oscar for his work on the movie, which will filmed on the Dingle Peninsula.

Actor John Mills also won Best Supporting Actor in the movie.

The village in the film was built from scratch from stone by the production  company and many locals from Dunquin and surrounding  villages were used as extras in the film.
