Greta Gerwig’s Barbie makes box office history

Greta Gerwig’s live-action Barbie film has made box office history.

Margot Robbie stars as the iconic doll while Ryan Gosling plays her love interest Ken in the film – which hit cinemas on July 21.

The blockbuster scored a massive $155 million at the US box office in its opening weekend, marking the biggest debut ever for a film directed by a woman.

The 2019 film Captain Marvel, which was co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, previously held the title after earning $153 million.

Barbie has also beat the box office record for the biggest opening weekend of the year — which was previously held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($146 million).

Meanwhile Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated historical drama Oppenheimer, which hit cinemas the same day as Barbie, opened to an incredible $80.5 million.

Barbie cost $145 million to make, and an estimated $150 million more was spent on the movie’s marketing campaign.

The film’s stellar cast includes Dua Lipa, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Emerald Fennell, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Hari Nef, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Rhea Pearlman, and Will Ferrell.

Barbie follows the titular character as she is expelled from Barbie Land for not being perfect enough, and sets off on an adventure in the real world.
