US Vogue have issued an apology after claiming that Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid were “embracing gender fluidity” in their latest issue.
The famous couple appear on the cover of their August issue, and in the cover story Vogue described them as “part of a new generation embracing gender fluidity” after the pair spoke about borrowing each other’s t-shirts.
The publication has admitted that they “missed the mark” after receiving serious backlash online.
The term ‘gender fluid’ refers to people who do not identify as male or female.
Think Vogue is a bit confused on what gender fluidity is! Wearing your gf’s T-shirt does not make you gender fluid https://t.co/5yvh8FmUky pic.twitter.com/yPADJDwvPV

It’s dangerous to be touting Gigi and Zayn as the faces of gender fluid! & contributing to the erasure of actual queer identities. ?????

Zayn & Gigi are now gender fluid because they wear each other’s clothes? Well I wear unisex band t-shirts does that make me gender fluid?

The cover story, which was written by Maya Singer, included quotes from a conversation between Zayn and Gigi about each other’s wardrobes.
Zayn asked Gigi, “What was that T-shirt I borrowed the other day? I like that shirt. And if it’s tight on me, so what? It doesn’t matter if it was made for a girl.”
And Gigi added, “It’s not about gender. It’s about, like, shapes. And what feels good on you that day. And anyway, it’s fun to experiment.”
“It can seem like everyone’s doing the same thing. Gender, whatever – you want to make your own statement. You know? You want to feel distinct,” Zayn continued.
In a statement, Vogue said, “The story was intended to highlight the impact the gender-fluid, non-binary communities have had on fashion and culture.
“We are very sorry the story did not correctly reflect that spirit – we missed the mark. We do look forward to continuing the conversation with greater sensitivity.”
