Oprah Winfrey spotted handing out supplies to victims of Maui wildfires at evacuation centre

Oprah Winfrey was spotted handing out supplies to victims of the Maui wildfires on Thursday.

The 69-year-old offered a helping hand at the War Memorial Stadium in Maui, which has been turned into an evacuation centre.

Speaking to the BBC at the stadium, the former talk show host said: “It’s a little overwhelming, you know. But I’m really so pleased to have so many people, you know, supporting, and people are just bringing what they can and doing what they can.”

Oprah, who is a part-time resident of Maui, continued: “So I came earlier, just to see what people needed, and then went shopping because often you make donations of clothes or whatever, and it’s not really what people need.”

“So I actually went to Walmart and Costco and got pillows, shampoo, diapers, sheets, pillowcases.”

The 69-year-old was later filmed placing supplies on beds in the evacuation centre, which has become the temporary home of residents who have lost their houses in the fires.

According to reports, the wildfires have claimed the lives of 55 people so far, with over 1,000 people still missing.

Former Xposé presenter Peter O’Riordan has been caught up in the disaster, as he and his family have “lost everything” due to the fires.

Earlier this week, he had tweeted Oprah asking for help, after losing his house and car in the blaze.
