Nicky Byrne on entering the Eurovision: 'Europe would know me as one of Westlife – I'm a decent singer'

Nicky Byne has revealed he would love to enter the Eurovision for Ireland – after rumours the Westlife singer has already been selected.

The 61st Eurovision is set to take place in Stockholm, Sweden in May and Nicky said voters in Europe would recognise him from Westlife, although he never got the chance to take on lead vocals.

“I absolutely get people on Twitter saying, ‘He was a backing vocalist’ — but in Westlife Shane and Mark were the producers’ favourites,” he explained.

“This might be a surprise to some people but it wouldn’t be a surprise to me. That’s why it would be more exciting for me to go,” he told The Irish Sun.

“I knew going into Westlife I was a decent singer. You have to believe in your own ability.”

Nicky is still yet to confirm reports that he will be heading to the Eurovision stage, but he admitted being a former Westlife star would definitely help with votes.

“In Europe they would know it was one of Westlife doing it and they would know it was that guy, the blonde one.”

“I was part of a very successful boyband that toured the world. You would be halfway up the ladder in terms of people knowing you,” he explained.

“That’s not necessarily going to make you do well in the show, but if you get a song on top of that, you might do well.”

Meanwhile the 2FM host admitted the Eurovision is an amazing opportunity for him.

“People talk about Eurovision like it’s a step down,” he said.

“It’s not 100 per cent I’m doing it — but if offered it, I would grasp it with both hands.”
