Love/Hate's Charlie Murphy opens up on new role

Charlie Murphy has opened up on her new role in RTÉ drama Rebellion – admitting she’s glad the series centres on the stories of four lead female characters.

The Love/Hate star, who plays Elizabeth Butler in the 1916 drama series, revealed that she couldn’t pass up the opportunity due to the rarity of strong female roles.

“One of the main things that drew me to this is that it is a huge privilege to be able to recount something about your own heritage but then looking at these characters in the script, I just thought I can’t pass this up,” she said.

The Wexford native also admitted that her character Elizabeth is involved in a number of romances in the drama but her she is more passionate about the cause during the rebellion.

“It is the uprising that inspires her more than the love interest,” told RTÉ TEN.

The drama, which also stars Sarah Greene, Ruth Bradley, Sophie Robinson, and Brian Gleeson, will air on January 3 on RTÉ One for five weeks.
