Irish movies in 2015: The Irish Film Board reveals the films to look out for

The Irish Film Board have revealed the slate for 2015, with production rising to €195 million in funding this year.

Chairman of the IFB Bill O’Herlihy announced details of a new Five Year Plan for the movie industry in Ireland.

With The Stag and Calvary doing the rounds of huge festivals last year,  Chief Executive of the Irish Film Board James Hickey said he was proud of their success so far.

“2014 was another strong year for the Irish film, television and animation industry with production activity levels breaking records for the third year running,” he said.

Highlights in 2015 include Gerard Barrett’s highly acclaimed film Glassland, which will screen at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.

The movie stars Toni Colette, Will Poulter and Jack Reynor and follows a single mum in Dublin battling with alcoholism.

Brooklyn: Domhnall Gleeson and Saoirse Ronan star

John Carney’s Sing Street is also one to watch this year, after his Oscar-winning movie Once has become one of the most successful Irish films.

Brooklyn starring Domhnall Gleeson and Saoirse Ronan will also screen at Sundance and Lenny Abrahmson’s new movie Room is also on the horizon.

Actress Amy Huberman attended the launch this morning and revealed she will be making her debut movie Bolt this year.

And star of Penny Dreadful Sarah Greene spoke about her role in the TV series.

“It’s great being back. I’m filming series two now and it’s great to be here in Dublin,” she said.

Tara Lee was also at the morning event, and spoke about her role in new Irish comedy A Date For Mad Mary.

Peter Coonan spoke about his role in The Guarantee and thanked the Irish Film Board for their support.

“It was an important movie, whether people liked it or not,” he said.

The IFB also revealed they want to focus on developing new talent this year and on producing great TV.

“The development of TV drama is important for the sustainability of a strong film industry such as what we see in countries such as the UK, France and Denmark.

“The future growth of film, TV drama and animation production activity could be further increased with more investment from the broadcasters,” James Hickey said.
