Gay Byrne: 'I hosted The Late Late Show for 40 years on two fried eggs and chips'

Gay Byrne has revealed his weekly dinner of egg and chips helped keep him front The Late Late Show for almost four decades.

The 81-year-old admitted he didn’t want to take changes when it came to his meal choices before going live

“Every Friday religiously we went in the canteen and the basic meal we had was two fried eggs and a plate of chips,” he said.

“It was called self-protection and because anything could happen in the RTE canteen and we had a show that night, to be on the safe side it was two fried eggs.

“I mean, how do you screw up two fried eggs and chips? That’s all we had. That’s how I survived on The Late Late Show on a Friday night,” he told The Seven O’Clock Show.

Meanwhile, the veteran broadcaster revealed his favourite guests while fronting the RTE show were comedians Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan, as well as late writer and dramatist Peter Ustinov.

Speaking about how the guests captivated the audience, Gay admitted it was two extremes.

“I was 37 years on the show and there was a lot of people. There are two extremes in the audience,” he admitted.

“One is when the total silence settles on people and there isn’t a sniffle or a snuffle or a movement or a yawn or a cough, because they are so engrossed in what the guest is talking about.

“The other is when the audience are falling about the place in hysterical, uncontrollable laughter because of what’s happening at the top,” he added.

“You know if they’re reacting like that, then obviously the people at home are reacting like that. Both of those feelings are wonderful, at either extreme.”
