Soap wars! Red Rock producer: 'Fair city was created years ago, it feels dated'

Red Rock’s executive producer Gareth Philips has insisted that the key a soap’s success is that it doesn’t become “dated” like RTE’s Fair City or shows that were created in that era.

The producer, who helped celebrate the TV3 soap’s 100th episode, has admitted he’s created a show with a modern and edgier feel.

“Our ambition from the start was to create a soap that felt contemporary and relevant and reflected Irish society,” he said.

“Fair City is a very different show. It was created in 1989 and while it’s a hugely popular show and part of the establishment, we wanted Red Rock to be much more modern and feel like it was set in a particular part of Dublin.

“Carrigstown could be anywhere – it doesn’t feel really connected to Dublin and even though Red Rock is set in a small coastal town, it still feels like it’s connected to a big city like Dublin,” he told the Herald.

“All those shows that were created years ago feel very dated now. We were trying to create a show that feels modern but is also edgier.”
