The 10 biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations around the world

This St. Patrick’s Day, people across the globe are celebrating the Irish.

We have compiled a list of 10 cities around the world that are hosting parades and events on the big day, so that you can celebrate wherever you are!

Take a look:

1. Dublin, Ireland

What better place to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than in Ireland’s capital itself? St. Patrick’s Festival 2022 will stretch across five days from March 16 to March 20.

And after the festival was cancelled two years in a row due to Covid-19, this year’s celebration will be bigger than ever.

The festival is set to include a vast program of live and virtual events, ranging from musical and theater performances to tours and food.

And of course, there’s the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 17, which promises lots of marching bands and more participants than ever before. Prepare to see locals and visitors in every shade of green, in silly hats, and in great spirits!

But perhaps the best way to experience St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland is to hit the streets and pubs and to soak in the festive atmosphere.

2. Boston, USA

After another two-year hiatus (thanks, Covid), the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in South Boston is returning on March 17.

Boston is a city full of Irish-American history, so you’ll be sure to see lots of colorful floats, pipe and drum bands, and enthusiastic crowds all dressed in green.

Among other St. Patrick’s Day-themed events in Boston this year is the Dropkick Murphys’ Boston blowout, where the band will be performing from March 17 to March 20 at the House of Blues or Roadrunner.

3. London, England

London does not disappoint on St. Patrick’s Day either.

London’s St. Patrick’s Day Festival in Trafalgar Square will include performances from various Irish guests, craft stands, and a market full of modern and traditional Irish food.

London also has many Irish pubs and bars that will no doubt be covered in green for the special day.

And don’t forget to head over to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade that sets off from Hyde Park Corner. Beautiful floats, marching bands, sports clubs, and Irish dancing schools will march in the parade for all to see. You can also enjoy a Guinness or two!

4. Sydney, Australia

Although St. Patrick’s Day is not a public holiday in Australia, Sydney still goes all out to celebrate the popular event.

The Sydney St. Patrick’s Day Festival in The Rocks will be a “palooza” of live music, Irish language sessions, Irish dancing, arts and crafts, and bars and food.

Over 1,000 marchers from 50 different groups will be marching in the parade on March 20, and there will be plenty of entertainment for all ages to enjoy.

Also be sure to check out The Mercantile Hotel’s Street Party, where there will be live music and lots and lots of dancing.

5. Chicago, USA

Maybe the most famous way Chicago celebrates St. Patrick’s Day is by dyeing the Chicago River green.

The river was dyed on March 12, marking the official return of the event for locals and visitors to enjoy.

The Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade was also held on March 12 with colorful displays, Irish flags held high, troops of Irish step dancers and bagpipers, and more.

6. Tokyo, Japan

Japan hosts 15 St. Patrick’s Day parades and Irish festivals every year, including the big celebrations in Tokyo. Ireland’s impact in Japan is strong, with Irish tech companies, Irish food products, and Irish universities all influencing daily Japanese life.

Tokyo’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, along with the “I Love Ireland Festival” held on St. Patrick’s Day weekend, is Japan’s largest Irish event.

Unfortunately, this year’s parade has been cancelled due to Covid-19.

7. Munich, Germany

St. Patrick’s Festival in Munich is not only the largest St. Patrick’s Day celebration in Germany, but it is also the biggest in mainland Europe!

Germans and visitors celebrate the big day by wearing lots of green, socializing with the crowds, and heading to an Irish pub for a German beer.

St. Patrick’s Day in Munich began in 1996 when the Munich Irish Network decided to hold a small event, and over 1,000 people showed up!

It has remained an extremely popular day ever since, and each year, Munich attracts people from the Irish community, students, and tourists.

8. Buenos Aires, Argentina

St. Patrick’s Day in Argentina is better known as El Dia de San Patricio, and Buenos Aires hosts an event each year where guests can try dark Irish beer and eat traditional Irish dishes cooked Argentine style.

The annual parade includes live Irish music and dancing, costumed elves and fairies, bagpipers, and Irish dancers.

A U2 tribute band will also perform this year, along with performances by Irish dance troupes Emerald Dance and Celtic Argentina.

To make things even better, Guinness is now being produced in Argentina!

9. Toronto, Canada

In a colorful celebration of Irish culture, heritage, and community, Toronto’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade will include marching bands, vibrant floats, thousands of leprechauns, and a sea of people dressed in green.

The parade has been held since 1987 and will run all the way through Toronto’s downtown this year.

Many restaurants in pubs in Toronto are offering special St. Patrick’s Day-themed menus, so head over for some good food and pints.

Many clubs and venues are also hosting events or gigs to celebrate the day.

10. New York City, USA

We can’t forget about good ol’ New York.

The first St. Patrick’s Day Parade in NYC was held on March 17, 1762, fourteen years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The parade is held annually, with fun floats and great music to go up and down Fifth Avenue.

Epic parties, live music, and Irish pride will fill the streets and spread across every part of the city. Not to mention, there are hundreds of Irish history sites to check out and thousands of bars/pubs to check out for some more fun.
