Dior has faced major backlash, as Jennifer Lawrence was cast in a new campaign for Mexican-inspired designs.
The actress has modelled for the brand for six years, but fans were outraged when she was cast for the new campaign, as the designs focus on Mexican culture and heritage.
In a behind-the-scenes interview, Jennifer said: “One of the main inspirations for this collection is the traditional women riders of Mexico, so I am really excited that this collection is looking at and celebrating these women’s heritage through such a modern lens.”
The campaign has received a huge amount of negative attention, as many people have accused the brand of cultural appropriation and questioned the company over why they didn’t use a Mexican model.
“This is like taking Jennifer Lawrence to play the role of Frida Khalo. Dior wanted a face that would reach to the audience at the expense of using Mexican styled clothing. Total disregard to beautiful Mexican women,” one Twitter user wrote.
“Dior’s latest collection is “inspired by the women riders of Mexico” but features Jennifer Lawrence as the model. Makes me wonder how many people of Mexican heritage helped design the collection in the first place… Let’s not forget, @Dior has done this Bihor,” another person tweeted.
“Well this is super f****d up! This collection was inspired by “women riders in Mexico” but is faced by Jennifer Lawrence and the shoot took place in California…..for real @Dior???” someone wrote on Instagram.

While Dior received huge criticism over the campaign, others defended the brand, as one person said: “Let it go. There are much more pressing issues.”
“JLaw has also been the face of Dior since 2012. It would be more questionable if she didn’t wear whatever look was next. Besides – people will PAY ATTENTION to her, because she is familiar. Isn’t that the point of exposure, and in turn highlighting a culture by appreciating?” another fan tweeted.
