The Netflix documentary has been a hot topic as of late, as the controversial crime-doc is based on the case of murder accused Steven Avery who previously did time in prison for 18 years for a crime he didn’t commit.

Following the documentaries verdict, JOE.ie contacted the creator of a Change.org petition to free Steven Avery that has recieved over 350,000 signatories, and he revealed the support the petition has recieved from Irish people.

Support: The Change.org petition has been supported worldwide

According to Michael, and the figures he obtained from Change.org, over 7, 500 Irish people have signed the petition and the country with the largest number of signatories is, obviously, the US with 41% of the 353,000 and counting signatures.

The online document has been signed by an incredible 144 different countries and it’s number of signatures continues to grow.

Speaking about the petition’s worldwide response, Michael told JOE.ie, “I certainly didn’t anticipate that my petition would gain so much exposure.”

“But, in hindsight, I’m not surprised that so many people who watched Making A Murderer took to the internet looking for a way to help Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey.

“The filmmakers have to be given enormous credit for provoking such a strong response out of viewers.

“If I hadn’t started this petition, someone else would have. Others did, actually. Mine just happened to draw the most signatures,” he added.
