Life is somewhat imitating art for actor Brian Gleeson who revealed his two grandfathers fought on opposite sides during the Easter Rising.
Playing revolutionary soldier Jimmy, whose brother Arthur fought for the British Army in World War 1 in RTE’s Easter Rising drama Rebellion – the Malahide native admitted the situation was “complicated”.
“My grandfather on my mother’s side fought in the IRA up in Finglas, and my grandfather on my father’s side fought in the British Army, so that sums up how complicated the whole thing is,” he said.

Family historical drama aside, the flame-haired star admitted shooting scenes for the RTE show in his hometown of Dublin was a dream.
“It’s great to be working at home. It was a burst of culture and energy so it was brilliant,” he told the Mirror.
“We’ve great actors, we’ve great writers, and I think it’s great to see just consistent quality in TV, film and theatre in Ireland.”
Rebellion starts on January 3 on RTE One.
