The original Practical Magic film followed orphan sisters Sally and Gillian Owens who were raised by their aunts Francis (Stockard Channing) and Jet (Dianne Wiest) who taught them the ways of witchcraft.

However, Sally and Gillian swore off magic in their adult lives after a terrible curse placed on their bloodline caused any man that an Owens woman loves to die.

After finding themselves in some sticky situations the sisters are forced to go back to casting spells to save their lives.

The Rules of Magic- Book 2/4

“For the Owens family, love is a curse that began in 1620, when Maria Owens was charged with witchery for loving the wrong man.”

“Hundreds of years later, in New York City at the cusp of the sixties, when the whole world is about to change, Susanna Owens knows that her three children are dangerously unique.”

“Difficult Franny, with skin as pale as milk and blood red hair, shy and beautiful Jet, who can read other people’s thoughts, and charismatic Vincent, who began looking for trouble on the day he could walk.”

“From the start Susanna sets down rules for her children: No walking in the moonlight, no red shoes, no wearing black, no cats, no crows, no candles, no books about magic. And most importantly, never, ever, fall in love.”

“But when her children visit their Aunt Isabelle, in the small Massachusetts town where the Owens family has been blamed for everything that has ever gone wrong, they uncover family secrets and begin to understand the truth of who they are. Back in New York City each begins a risky journey as they try to escape the family curse.”

“The Owens children cannot escape love even if they try, just as they cannot escape the pains of the human heart.”

“The two beautiful sisters will grow up to be the revered, and sometimes feared, aunts in Practical Magic, while Vincent, their beloved brother, will leave an unexpected legacy.”

“Thrilling and exquisite, real and fantastical, The Rules of Magic is a story about the power of love reminding us that the only remedy for being human is to be true to yourself.”

Magic Lessons- Book 3/4

“In an unforgettable novel that traces a centuries-old curse to its source, beloved author Alice Hoffman unveils the story of Maria Owens, accused of witchcraft in Salem, and matriarch of a line of the amazing Owens women and men featured in Practical Magic and The Rules of Magic.”

“Where does the story of the Owens bloodline begin? With Maria Owens, in the 1600s, when she’s abandoned in a snowy field in rural England as a baby. Under the care of Hannah Owens, Maria learns about the ‘Nameless Arts.'”

“Hannah recognizes that Maria has a gift and she teaches the girl all she knows. It is here that she learns her first important lesson: Always love someone who will love you back.”

“When Maria is abandoned by the man who has declared his love for her, she follows him to Salem, Massachusetts. Here she invokes the curse that will haunt her family.”

“And it’s here that she learns the rules of magic and the lesson that she will carry with her for the rest of her life. Love is the only thing that matters.”

The Book of Magic- Book 4/4

“The Owens family has been cursed in matters of love for over three-hundred years but all of that is about to change.”

“The novel begins in a library, the best place for a story to be conjured, when beloved aunt Jet Owens hears the deathwatch beetle and knows she has only seven days to live.”

“Jet is not the only one in danger—the curse is already at work.”

The Book of Magic, Alice Koffman

“A frantic attempt to save a young man’s life spurs three generations of the Owens women, and one long-lost brother, to use their unusual gifts to break the curse as they travel from Paris to London to the English countryside where their ancestor Maria Owens first practiced the Unnamed Art.”

“The younger generation discovers secrets that have been hidden from them in matters of both magic and love by Sally, their fiercely protective mother.”

“As Kylie Owens uncovers the truth about who she is and what her own dark powers are, her aunt Franny comes to understand that she is ready to sacrifice everything for her family, and Sally Owens realizes that she is willing to give up everything for love.”
