The News Industry Award 2022

The Goss.ie Women of the Year Awards will take place on Sunday, October 9th at The Royal Marine Hotel Dun Laoghaire, with broadcaster Gráinne Seoige as host.

We will honour women across multiple genres, including business, the arts, social justice and sports. Plus we have launched a special ‘Local Hero’ category, where Goss.ie readers can nominate local women in their area.

This year the awards are in partnership with Google, Casillero del Diablo, Woulfe and Dingle Distillery.

Women’s Aid is our official charity partner for 2022 and will be delivering a keynote speech at the awards, we will also be running a charity raffle on the day to raise funds for the charity.

A highly-esteemed and all-female judging panel will decide the winners of each category.

The News Industry Award, sponsored by Dingle Distillery, shines a light on women in news who go the extra mile.

Whether it’s reporting from Ukraine on their devastating war, going behind the scenes of the pandemic or delving deep into political stories of public interest, these women have continued to stand out in the news industry.

Take a look at this year’s nominees:

Zara King

The last two years have seen the rise of Virgin Media news reporter Zara King.

She first made an impact when she reported live during the COVID pandemic, whether it was from the daily briefings where she challenged the government on restrictions, or personally creating a documentary on the challenges facing so many in her show: ‘Ireland Under Lockdown: COVID-19 Stories.’

In recent months Zara reported live from the border of Ukraine, reporting on the true impact of the war, speaking to families who had escaped, and victims who had lost so much.

This year Zara also launched the highly-successful Virgin Media podcast ‘The Group Chat’, where she discusses ongoing news stories.

Aoife Grace Moore

Political Correspondent Aoife Grace Moore hit the spotlight when her exclusive story on the now infamous ‘Golf Gate’ went viral.

The award-winning journalist has continued to break hard-hitting news stories and recently announced that she is writing her first book, focusing on political party Sinn Féin.

In the book Aoife “will explore key questions about how the party operates, its relationship to the remnants of the IRA… drawing on extensive interviews with the people who have driven the party’s strategy, and those they have left behind, this book will tell the story of why and how Sinn Féin does politics differently.”

As well as covering essential political stories, Aoife has also battled trolling on her social channels and has spoken out about the endless misogynistic messages she has received online.

Claire Byrne

2022 marks the end of an era for broadcaster Claire Byrne, as she has chosen to walk away from her current affairs show on RTÉ, Claire Byrne Live.

In an honest interview about the decision to leave, Claire made it clear that she needed to focus on her family more, and that she left when this could not be facilitated, a decision that has been praised.

Throughout her show, Claire has tackled subjects from the COVID pandemic to conducting interviews with Ukrainian nationals during the ongoing war. Her show has always caused a strong reaction amongst its viewers and created important talking points.

Claire continues to host her mid-morning current affairs show on RTÉ Radio 1, Today With Claire Byrne.
