Hozier on finding fame: 'It's been crazy, I never expected it'

Hozier has revealed finding fame was a complete shock.

Within a year the Wicklow singer has earned himself a Grammy nomination and landed the number 1 spot in the US.

“It’s been crazy. Things took off in a way that I never could have expected,” Hozier admitted.

“I certainly didn’t imagine this year to go the way it’s gone and the music has been accepted by audiences I never thought it would be accepted by.”

Duet: Hozier sang with Annie Lennox at the Grammys

Appearing in the latest episode of RTE Two’s Other Voices, Hozier said his hit song Take Me To Church will always be of huge importance.

“Those vocals were recorded in my attic. A lot of that was home-done with Rob Kirwan, you know.

“We retracked a lot of it. I imagined it maybe on Irish radio, if that, but I imagined myself with a few more years of obscurity. I didn’t think the music would go anywhere near the level that it has.

“I was always proud of Take Me To Church. I was proud of it when I wrote it but I certainly didn’t see it as a top 10 hit.”

And Hozier was the envy of men all over the world when he performed at the Victoria’s Secret Show, with the world’s most beautiful models strutting the catwalk to his music.

“There are all these things that happen and all of a sudden your name is next to somebody like Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran.

“Initially that is as surreal as anyone could think that is because people who are such distant intangible icons become… you start chatting to them about cheese sandwiches or something one day.

“That’s very, very strange to me and I felt very much an outsider because I wasn’t part of a scene or anything like that.”

Other Voices airs at 22:50 on RTÉ2
