Brendan O'Connor on leaving the Saturday Night Show: 'I've missed time with my family'

Brendan O’Connor has said he is looking forward to spending more time with his family – now that the Saturday Night Show is coming to an end.

The RTE presenter confirmed last night that this will be the last season of the series, with RTE announcing Ray D’Arcy will now host a Saturday night entertainment show.

Speaking about his final series, Brendan admitted he can’t wait to spend the weekends with his family again.

“It’s been an amazing five years. It’s not a thing you think you’ll get to do when you’re 40 but I’m so glad I had my mid-life crisis on Saturday nights on RTE1.

“My wife and kids, who have learnt to stay out of my way on Saturdays, will, hopefully, be glad to have me back at the weekends now.

“I missed so many events in Anna and (my daughter) Mary’s little lives over the last five years,” he told the Sunday Independent.

“I also missed countless nights out, weddings, stags, weekends away and visits to Mum and Dad. I’ll be glad to have a more normal life now.

New show: Brendan is returning in 2016

“I’m very proud of what we achieved with the show and we are certainly going out on a high. We beat the Late Late a few weeks ago, which everyone should do once, and grew our audience this year, which bucks the TV trend.

“I wouldn’t swop the adventure for the world, and I got to work with so many great people as the team evolved and mutated.

“I’ll miss that feeling of having a team and crew of brilliant people every week who all have your back and who are willing you to succeed in putting the final 10pc into a show that they have created the first 90pc of.”

RTE have confirmed that Brendan will return in 2016 with a new format that will air mid week.
