Kate Garraway urges fellow carers to ‘sometimes put themselves first’ after getting painful infection

Kate Garraway has urged fellow carers to “sometimes put themselves first”, after getting a painful eye infection.

The Good Morning Britain presenter’s husband Derek was hospitalised for over a year after a gruelling battle with Covid-19.

Derek is now recovering at home, but he’s still got a long road ahead of him as the virus left him with multiple health issues.

Taking to Instagram on Sunday, Kate revealed she had neglected her own health as she took care of her beloved husband.

Sharing a photo of her swollen eye, the 54-year-old wrote: “Ouch! But thanks to the brilliant @nhs team @moorfieldsuae not permanent.”

“Inflamed cornea caused probably by wearing my contacts for too long on some very long days recently. Hence the glasses on @gmb on Friday. And to think I nearly didn’t get it checked out as was wanting to get back home to do some physio with Derek.”

“A further reminder if you are a carer, parent or anyone really you have to sometimes put yourself first otherwise you are no use to anyone you are trying to help. 48 hours of putting drops in every hour day AND night & I will be back on track.”

Commenting on the post, one fan wrote: “Get well soon! It’s okay to take a break and get better not only for yourself but for Derek too 🖤”

Another penned: “Please look after YOU! 💖”, while a third commented: “Take care so important to be kind to yourself especially as a carer ❤️❤️❤️”

Last month, Kate scooped the authored documentary prize at the National Television Awards for her ITV documentary Finding Derek about her husband’s health battle.
