Adele has opened up about the moment she decided to end her marriage.
The singer split from Simon Konecki, who she shares a nine-year-old son named Angelo with, in 2019.
Ahead of the release of her new album ’30’, the 33-year-old sat down for a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey during a two-hour CBS special called ‘One Night Only’ on Sunday.
During the interview, Adele recalled that she realised she wanted a divorce while talking with some friends.
The Easy On Me singer said: “We were all answering these questions in this very bougie magazine, and it was something like, ‘What’s something that no one would ever know about you?’ And I just said it in front of three of my friends, I was like: ‘I’m really not happy. I’m not living, I’m just plodding along.'”
“And I remember a lyric that I wrote that I put on a song on 25, which is ‘I want to live and not just survive.’ I definitely felt like that. And it was when I admitted to my own friends who thought I was really happy that actually, I’m really unhappy, and they were all aghast.”
“I felt like it was sort of from there that I was like, what am I doing it for?” she added.
Adele also said that the stability she found when she met her ex-husband “probably saved her life”.
She told Oprah: “He came at such a moment, where the stability that he and Angelo have given me, no one else would have ever been able to give me, especially at that time in my life.”
“I could’ve easily gone down some dodgy paths, sort of self-destructive from being so overwhelmed by all of it. And he came in and he was stable, the most stable person I’ve ever had in my life up until that point.”
The songstress is now dating American sports agent Rich Paul, who she met on the dancefloor at a birthday party a few years ago.
Speaking about her new beau, Adele said: “Yeah, he’s just hilarious. Oh, he’s so funny. Yeah, and very smart.”
“And I met him and then a couple of years later, we went out for dinner, which he says was a business meeting,” she laughed.” I’m like, a business meeting about what? We wouldn’t be having a meeting about business.”
“And then it was just the first time we’d hung out only on our own, and not with other friends and stuff like that. So that was a very natural way. I think that’s how people would normally meet each other, like, in real life.”
She added it’s “quite incredible watching him do what he does. And just the easiness of it,” and said he’s making the relationship “easy” for her.
