Major entertainment show axed by ITV after failing to compete with BBC rival

ITV have reportedly axed The Masked Dancer, just over one year after they decided to “rest” the series.

The wacky reality show follows a group of masked stars, as they battle it out on stage with their dancing talents.

Just like The Masked Singer, one celebrity’s identity is revealed at the end of each episode, as they are unmasked on stage in a wild guessing game.

The Masked Dancer first aired in 2021, and was hosted by Joel Dommett.

The star-studded judging panel consisted of Peter Crouch, Oti Mabuse, Jonathan Ross and Davina McCall.

A TV insider said: “The Masked Dancer was always something of a tricky sell.

“But ITV thought it was worth taking a punt on a concept which had clearly struck a chord with the public as The Masked Singer.”

“But they made the mistake of shifting it from a show that ran every night over a week, to a weekly show that aired on a Saturday night.

“That saw it go out on the same evening as Strictly Come Dancing, which is a very challenging rival.”

Thankfully, fans can expect to see plenty more of The Masked Singer, as its set return for a sixth season.
