Saoirse Ronan on the pressures of fame: 'I needed to leave Ireland'

Saoirse Ronan has admitted that she felt like she had to leave Ireland because she “needed to be anonymous”.

The Carlow native explained that she was often recognised by fans when she was at home and wanted a more private life in London.

“I needed to leave Ireland. I love it but I needed to be anonymous,” she said.

“I was recognized quite a bit at home and i was very aware of growing up in an industry were everything was done for you.”

“So I told my parents i wanted to know how to pay my own bills, cook a meal, do my own washing – but it was tough.”

Saoirse stars in drama Brooklyn where she plays a young immigrant to America and the 21-year-old admitted that living in London ran parallel to the flick.

“It was the first time ever, professionally, where my personal life and my character’s life ran parallel in every way,” she told Radio Times.

“It was like being forced to stare at yourself in a mirror close-up and not being about to look away.”
