The Limerick native learned of her father’s death through a letter when she was 7 years old and admitted that she struggled to return to Ethiopia after his passing.

“He died in a car accident in Addis. It took a while [to go back to Ethiopia],” she told Ryan Tubridy on RTE’s The Late Late Show.

“I don’t know why, I think it’s because I was growing up and my mom was a single mom raising me.

“We went back eventually – I think I was 18. I met my family [and] it was very moving. We went to my father’s grave.”

When asked by the RTE host was it a difficult journey to make, the actress explained that it was but a necessary one.

“Very much so. It was a necessary one, I think you can’t ignore our history. I think it’s something that’s important to do in grief and death.

“I think people in a strange way get embarrassed by death. It’s something deeply personal and I think we all have different ways of dealing with it,” she added.
