Republic of Telly’s Kevin McGahern on filming in the US: ‘RTÉ told us to not get shot’

Kevin McGahern has admitted that RTÉ warned him to not get shot while filming over in America.

The Republic Of Telly star travelled to America for a three-part series with the broadcaster – and came across some scary individuals.

“RTE just told us, ‘Don’t get shot,'” he said about the stand-off.

The comedian revealed how he and his filming team got roped into a stand-off between neo-Nazis, diehard southerners, police and anti-fascists groups in South Carolina.

“I’ve never seen as many guns outside a government building in all my life – the cops had guns, the helicopters had guns, there were snipers on every roof, the people had guns.

“These crazy f**king red necks were going around with guns and pistols strapped to their sides, that felt hairy,” he told the Irish Mirror.

“You had two opposing sides who hated each other and everyone was strapped but at least I was surrounded by big bikers.

“It was me, the camera man, the sound man and the director, so just four hairy Irish lads walking around the crossfire asking stupid questions.”

Scary: Kevin was shocked bu how accessible guns are in the US | VIPIRELAND.COM

The Cavan native also revealed that he was shocked by how unbelievably accessible guns are in the States.

“The rifle that was used in the Orlando shooting, the day after that guys were going in and asking for it.

“One was being sold every eight minutes, it was pretty shocking but every time there’s a shooting over there it’s an advertisement for gun shops,” he added.

“Some lunatic shoots up a place, the President goes on the news and says ‘We need to do something about gun culture,’ guys get terrified he’s going to take away all their guns so they just stock pile weapons. It’s kind of nuts.”

Guests attend The IFTA Awards 2015

Exciting: Kevin is delighted to be attending the IFTAs as a nominee this year | VIPIRELAND.COM

Meanwhile, Kevin’s show Republic Of Telly has been nominated for an IFTA, which the TV host is delighted about.

“It feels lovely, it’s nice to have a reason to go to the IFTAs. I’ve been before and when you’re not nominated it feels like you’re at someone else’s debs and you’re just clapping away like a bo**ocks.

“It’s nice to be nominated and to feel accepted into the Irish Film and Television community, I always felt like a bit of an outsider before.”

Kevin McGahern’s America airs on Tuesday at 9.30pm on RTE Two.
