Paul Mescal to star in second ‘gay romance’ drama alongside The Crown star

Paul Mescal has been announced as the lead in a second gay romance drama alongside The Crown actor Josh O’Connor.

The Normal People star was recently nominated for a BAFTA for his role as Harry in the gay fantasy film All Of Us Strangers.

The 28-year-old will now work alongside Josh in the Oliver Hermanus adaptation of The History of Sound.

The film will follow Mescal’s character, Lionel and O’Connor’s character, David as they set out to record the lives and voices of US army men during WW1.

As the young men embark on their journey to discover the stories and tales, they find their lives are changed forever.

The History Of Sound will be based on the Puschart prize-winning short story from the American author Ben Shattuck.

The exciting new adaptation will be produced by End Cue and Film4 will finance the production.

Production company Embankment will introuduce the project to international buyers at next weeks American Film Market.

Speaking on Mescal’s new film project, director Oliver Hermanus said: “I instantly fell in love with Ben Shattuck’s flawlessly beautiful short story and knew I had to be involved in its journey to the screen.

“Paul and Josh are two of the most promising actors of their generation who will share with us deeply soulful performances.

“This is an unexpected love story that needs to be told. It is a journey through the life of America, across the 20th century and the traditions of American folk music, all seen through the bond between two men immersed in the history of sound.”

Filming for The History Of Sound will begin this month on location in both the UK and Italy.
