Gay Byrne is ‘doing ok’ – but won’t return to the airwaves until 2017

Gay Byrne is said to be “doing ok” as he continues to battle prostate cancer.

Last month, the famed presenter revealed that he had “a bit of cancer in the prostate” on his Sunday radio show on Lyric FM.

Since his diagnosis, the 82-year-old has been spending plenty of time at his home in Ballsbridge with his wife Kathleen Watkins, who has been taking great care of him.

“His show finished up last Sunday for Christmas anyway and there’s no return date yet for when he’ll be back on air but he’s in good form and is in good hands,” an RTÉ source told the Herald.

The RTÉ star previously said that he decided to tell his listeners about his cancer diagnosis to “avoid any rumours” about his absence.

“I was stating it to my listeners to avoid any rumours or talk,” he told the Irish Independent.

The presenter’s cancer diagnosis comes just less than a year after he was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin after having a heart attack.
