Conor McGregor receives highly prestigious award

It's been quite the year for the MMA star

Conor McGregor has been named as RTÉ’s Sport Person of the Year 2016, beating out 12 other nominees.

The Notorious was not present for the ceremony, but accepted his award in a pre-recorded video.

In the video Conor said “Thanks so much to the fans for voting for me. I’m extremely grateful and extremely blessed to have the support of my home country.”

“I’m sorry I couldn’t make the award ceremony. You know I love to stick on a good suit and roll into these award ceremonies to collect an award.”

He finished off his acceptance speech by saying “It’s been a hell of a year. I look forward to 2017.”

It certainly has been quite the year for the MMA star. He became the UFC’s first fighter to hold two titles simultaneously.

He accomplished this feat with an iconic second-round knockout of Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205.

This prestigious award comes just after it was announced that Conor will be taking 10 months off as he’s set to become a dad with girlfriend Dee Devlin.
