A lecturer, bar man and a ballroom dancer: What Irish celebs did before they were famous

before they were famous II

As the saying goes Rome wasn’t built in day and much like the famous faces we’re used to seeing on Goss.ie, not all started their life as a celebrity.

From paper rounds to serving you your cod and chips, celebrities have been there too – sweating it out a Saturday to get some extra pocket money for the weekend.

Having to start somewhere, Goss.ie takes a look back on our favourite Irish celebs and the jobs they had before hitting the big time.

1. Pat Kenny

Launch of UTV Ireland at The Marker

With a chemical engineering degree under his belt from UCD, young Pat set his sights on the national broadcaster to make his mark on Irish television.

However, we all got to start somewhere and that somewhere for the silver haired fox was Bolton Street College D.I.T. as a lecturer.

Beginning his broadcasting career in parallel to his academic day-job, Pat then started work as a continuity announcer on RTÉ radio in the mid-1970s.

Where else was the renowned broadcaster suppose to have learned his sultry radio tones?

Now the Radio presenter’s base is Newstalk and he has made his mark on UTV Ireland with a new current affairs show.

2. Colin Farrell

We all remember the first time we saw Castleknock native Colin Farrell appear on our telly boxes doing the two step while wearing a fine pair of black cowboy boots.

However before making his mark in a flanel shirt on hit show Ballykissangel, the Hollywood actor took up a shift in Temple Bar’s Elephant & Castle.

The True Detective actor served many American tourists and Irish punters the restaurants famous chicken wings and burgers.

With smouldering brown eyes and charm to boot, we’ve no doubt at Goss.ie that Colin didn’t have to work too hard for tips.

3. Laura Whitmore

Laura Whitmore at Today FM

A career in media was always on the cards for blonde bombshell Laura Whitmore.

Before winning the coveted presenting job on MTV News, Laura was just a simple intern with Newstalk.

Learning the tricks of trade in the Irish radio station, the Wicklow native was thrown into a world of interviewing stars, researching guests and making plenty cups of tea.

The TV star previously said there was more pressure in Newstalk then in MTV as it was her first job out of college and she credits it for teaching her the ropes in media.

4. Michael Fassbender

Guests arrive at the The Irish Film & Television Academy awards 2014

Goss.ie’s favourite German Kerryman, Michael Fassbender, wasn’t always the hunky award-winning actor we’ve all come to know.

The star of very revealing film Shame worked in numerous bars before he hit the big time but what you might not know – he used to conduct market research for Britain’s Royal Mail.

Yes folks, you could of been that person on the end of the phone ignoring Michael’s phonecalls.

Imagine answering your phone to the husky country tones of the 35-year-old asking if you used the service but alas you’ll never know.

It would make you think twice about giving those cold callers the cold shoulder again!

5. Ryan Tubridy

Late Late new set 03

The Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy is the exception the ordinary job rule.

You see, RTE was in the Dubliners blood since he was a young fella dreaming of becoming the station’s lead broadcaster.

Having started his career in broadcasting at the tender age of 12, Ryan reviewed books for the RTÉ 2FM show Poporama.

After leaving college it seemed the TV star couldn’t shake of the Irish broadcaster and became a runner working on The Gerry Ryan Show becoming the show’s connoisseur of tea and coffee.

Make us a builder’s brew there when you’re ready Ryan!

6. Susan Loughnane

Taste of Dublin 2014 opening day

Before we all came to know Susan in RTE’s gangland drama Love/Hate, she was taking over the tills at Abercombie and Fitch.

The 28-year-old, who won an IFTA for her portrayal as drug addicted prostitute Debbie, looked a far cry from an employee of the hip American retailer in the hit series.

The Malahide native even worked in the clothing giant whilst on breaks from the crime show.

But like all good things, they must come to an end and Susan was fired from her job after missing a shift.

However, it’s not all bad for the flame-haired actress who’s currently living it up in London.

7. Aidan Turner

the hobbit premiere 10

Before we knew of Aidan and his smouldering chest pectorials in BBC hit show Poldark, the Irish actor was waltzing his way to Hollywood.

Yes ladies and Gentlemen, Aidan was a toe-tapping, hip shaking and latin loving ballroom dancer.

Akin to Lycra, sequins and sparkle, Aidan represented Ireland’s in ballroom championships abroad.

Now in one of the biggest shows on the television we’re holding out on the moment Aidan whips out his Cha-Cha or Viennese Waltz in the middle of tense moment in the historical drama.

8. Lisa Cannon

Lisa Cannon launches the Fashion Bus in association with Xpose & Oasis at St Stephens Green

Professional chatterbox, Lisa Cannon has knack for bagging herself interviews with the world’s biggest stars.

The Xpose darling’s love of TV and film was apparent before she starred on the entertainment show.

Lisa followed a popular Irish rite of passage by heading to the states to find the American dream.

Whilst there the TV star worked as a production assistant on Sex and the City.

Lisa’s biggest claim to fame on the show was delivering Sarah Jessica Parker her scripts to her trailer, eh winning!

9. Jamie Dornan

The Irish Film & Television Academy awards 2014

Last but definitely not least, Jamie you rocked our worlds in Fifty Shades of Grey, you terrified us in The Fall and you’ve captured our drool modelling underwear for Calvin Klein.

But before the Irish actor kicked on to become the biggest heartthrob of all time, he performed with his bessie mate in band Sons of Jim.

The duo performed on UTV’s The Kelly Show and even recorded an album of tracks before the 32-year-old went swanning off back to Hollywood to become the biggest hunk of all time.
